In short: A trope is a recurring pattern in stories – a familiar character constellation, situation or turn that readers recognize at once (such as „enemies to lovers“).
Using tropes deliberately
Use the expectation: Tropes raise familiar expectations – that can give footing and pleasure.
Break or twist them: A trope is most rewarding when you vary it surprisingly rather than simply serving it.
Not the same as cliché: A trope is a pattern; it becomes a cliché only when it's worn out and unimaginative.
