Where the term comes from
The term „beta reader“ comes from software development: a beta version is tested by selected users before release. By analogy, the very first readers of a rough draft are sometimes called „alpha readers“.
How to use beta readers well
Not just friends: Goodwill helps little. The most useful readers are those who honestly say where they stumble.
Ask for reactions, not solutions: Where readers drop out is valuable; how you fix it, you decide yourself.
Look for patterns: If one person says something, it's an opinion. If several do, it's a signal.
