Synopsis
In short: A synopsis is the compact summary of a planned book: what it's about, who the characters are, how the plot unfolds. It serves your own orientation and the pitch to publishers or agents.
Where the term comes from
„Synopsis“ comes from the Greek for „overview“, literally „seeing together“. In German publishing the same document is called an „Exposé“, from the French for „account“ or „presentation“.
What belongs in a synopsis
The core in one paragraph: Theme, main character, central conflict – tight and clear, to the point.
The whole plot: Unlike a blurb, a synopsis also reveals the ending – it is not a marketing text.
Audience and framing: Genre, length and who the book is for help others assess it.
