Turning Point
In short: A turning point is the moment a story changes direction – a decision, an event or a revelation after which nothing continues as before. It is the pivot of the plot.
Where the term comes from
Aristotle already described the „peripeteia“, the reversal of fortune, as the heart of tragedy. In German literature Ludwig Tieck made the turning point the hallmark of the novella in 1829: it needed a point where the story turns unexpectedly.
How to set a turning point
Make it truly change things: A real turning point alters the character's course – not just the scenery. Before and after should feel different.
Prepare the ground: The strongest turns feel earned because the story quietly built toward them.
Give the moment weight: Take the time a pivotal moment deserves – don't rush past the instant everything shifts.
