Antagonist
In short: The antagonist is the force opposing the protagonist – often a person, sometimes a group, a system or an inner resistance. It creates the conflict.
A convincing opponent
Their own logic: The strongest antagonist believes they are justified – they have reasons, not just malice.
An equal match: The more serious the threat, the greater the tension. A weak opponent drains the story.
Needn't be a person: Illness, poverty, time or one's own fear can all act as an antagonist.
