What I learn on the underground

by amara_osei · 24 June 2026 · Biography & Memoir

Amara documents the daily U4 ride. A meditation on seeing the new before it becomes familiar.

Line U4, direction Hütteldorf, daily at 8:14. Twelve minutes.

The man with the newspaper. The child who cries silently. The students who are too loud but for real reasons. The sky just before Karlsplatz — visible for three seconds, then tunnel again.

I am writing these things down because I notice I am beginning to stop seeing them.

Every person who is new somewhere carries a different gaze. This sight is lost as soon as you belong.

I have been in Vienna for nine months. I do not yet belong. That is why I am writing: before I have stopped being astonished.
