Lucía

Lucía can't find the beat for fourteen months. She quits once, comes back. Then in March: it settles. Isabel hears it. Lucía says: it felt like stopping trying. Isabel says: that's the whole thing.
Lucía came to me at eleven unable to find the beat. Not a little off — genuinely lost, looking for the rhythm in her head instead of her chest, trying to think her way into it, which is the one way it doesn't come. I've seen this before. Usually it resolves within a few months.
With Lucía it took fourteen months. I had nearly given up twice. She had definitely given up once, told her mother she wanted to quit, and came back two weeks later without explaining why. Then in March, in the middle of a sequence she'd done thirty times, something shifted. She didn't hear it happen. I did. A settling, like something finding its proper place after a long time slightly wrong.
Afterwards she said: was that it? I said yes. She thought about it. She said: it felt like stopping trying. I said that's exactly what it is. That's the whole thing, actually.
