Felix

by Thomas · 18 June 2026 · Local & Regional

Minus eight degrees, wrong presentation, two vets asleep. Thomas calls his father. The calf stands after nineteen minutes. It's called Felix now. He looks at Thomas like he remembers nothing.

The night of February 7th to 8th, 2022. Minus eight degrees outside. I went to the barn at half past eleven because the cow Brunhilde — that's her name, it was the name before I took over the farm, I didn't change it — Brunhilde was starting to calve and what I saw wasn't good.

Wrong presentation. The calf was lying sideways. I called the vet, he was asleep. I called the other one, he was asleep too. I called my father, he wasn't asleep, he was in the barn in three minutes. We didn't talk much. He did what he always did, I did what he showed me, the calf came out at two in the morning and lay there and didn't move.

Nineteen minutes. That's how long it took until it stood up. I counted every minute.

It's called Felix now. My daughter decided that. He's two years old today and the healthiest animal on the farm. Sometimes he looks at me like he remembers nothing.
