48 Hours

Lars sails alone for two days into the Sognefjord. On the second morning he stops seeing the fjord as scenery. After thirty hours the thoughts go quiet. He sells the boat in October. He should have kept it.
I took the third boat out alone in June two years ago, two days into the Sognefjord. No specific destination, no deadline, phone off. I'd done overnight sails before but not two full days without other people.
What I noticed: the second morning the fjord looked different. Not visually different — the same water, the same mountains. But I had been looking at it long enough that I stopped seeing it as scenery and started seeing it as a place. There's a distinction there that I find hard to explain without sounding more mystical than I intend to.
I also noticed how much of what I normally think about is other people. What they think, what I said to them, what I should have said. After about thirty hours that quieted down to almost nothing and I thought about the boat instead. The sound the hull makes in a swell. Whether the forestay tension was right. Small things. Real things.
I sold that boat in October. I should have kept it.
