Wrong Address
by Rudi · 18 June 2026 · Short Stories
Rudi's apprentice delivers a wedding cake to a funeral — Kirchenthurnen and Kirchlindach. He didn't want to be rude. The deceased's family calls, not angry: he liked strawberries. Rudi sends no bill.
The cake was for a wedding in Kirchenthurnen, the funeral was in Kirchlindach. Both places begin with Kirch. That was the problem, or at least part of it.
I only noticed the wrong delivery when I was back at the bakery and saw the correct address in the system. I called my apprentice who had made the delivery and he said: I thought it was odd that so many people were wearing black, but I handed over the cake and said nothing. I asked him why he'd said nothing. He said he didn't want to be rude.
The family called. Not angry — that was the surprising part. The mother of the deceased said her husband had liked strawberries very much. I didn't send a bill. To this day I don't know what was served at the wedding.
