Twins

Nobody warns you about the logistics of twins. People say: it's twice the work, which is true but misses the nature of the work. It's not twice the same work. It's two simultaneous versions of the same work that diverge at unpredictable moments. One is hungry. The other is tired but won't admit it. One laughs at something. The other watches your face to see if you're laughing, decides based on your expression, and adjusts accordingly. They are two separate people who are also in constant negotiation about what kind of two separate people to be.

My daughter Elise is direct, loud, interested in everything. My son Thomas is quiet and specific and has opinions about which cup is his. They're six. I've been parenting them for six years and I still can't predict what any given situation will produce. This is either the best or the worst possible training for being a graphic designer, where the client is also often two people in negotiation who don't know what they want until they see what they don't want.
