Hannelore describes her watercolour class — Mr Wendt with his expensive sketchbook and English YouTube system, Mrs Koopmann who paints only boats. Hannelore paints whatever is in front of her. By the third session she's checking the clock. She knows that feeling from work.
In my watercolour class there are eight of us and all of us are retired. That sounds harmless. It isn't.
Mr Wendt, formerly something at a bank, comes with a sketchbook that costs more than my first delivery bag and mixes his colours according to a system he copied from an English YouTube video, in English, even though he speaks no English. Colour mixing apparently works without language. Mrs Koopmann paints only boats. Exclusively boats. The instructor suggested twice that she might try something different and she looked at him as if he'd offered to cancel Christmas.
I'm the only one with no plan for what to paint. I paint whatever is in front of me. Last week it was my coffee cup, the week before a shoe. The instructor says this is a good approach. I think he means it genuinely, but I can't rule out that he has no idea what else to say.
By the third session I noticed I was checking the clock to see when it would move on. I know that feeling from work. Whether that's a good or a bad sign I haven't decided yet.
