ARIS, a visa algorithm, rejects the application. Insufficient ties to home country. He had a house, a mother, tomatoes. The tomatoes weren't in the form.
The form asked for evidence of ties to the home country.
Aminu had a house in Lagos, a mother, eleven years at the same company, and a garden with tomatoes.
ARIS, the automated risk identification system, processed 847,000 applications. Accuracy: 94.3%.
What the figure didn't measure: Aminu's tomatoes.
His application was rejected: Insufficient evidence of ties to the home country. The appeal failed. He watched the conference via livestream — from Lagos, in his house, with his tomatoes.
ARIS worked as intended. The approach was the problem.
