The most important one, as explained to tourists: you speak quietly in the sauna, if at all. In reality, AnnaLiisa has regulars who close business deals loudly in there, hold political debates, and once, unforgettably, negotiated an entire divorce while the man's lawyer sat literally next to him on the bench, both sweating, both trying to keep their composure.
Her favorite observation concerns what she calls the löyly sovereignty: officially, no one decides who wields the ladle or how much water hits the stones. Unofficially, every sauna session features a silent power struggle between at least two older gentlemen, each convinced only he has the right instinct for the perfect amount of steam, circling each other with pointedly casual remarks like Bit chilly in here suddenly, don't you think, until one gives in, or both stand up at once and it becomes a silent duel.
What she loves most about her job is watching how quickly the sauna dissolves social hierarchies while simultaneously creating new, more absurd ones. A CEO and his intern sit equally naked and equally sweaty side by side, but the intern, if he happens to come from a sauna family, suddenly holds more authority over the löyly question than his boss.
The sauna is the one place a Finn will openly argue, as long as it's about water on hot stones and nothing else, AnnaLiisa says. About everything else in life, we'd rather stay quiet.
