The man at the wrong moment

by lena_brenner · 24 June 2026 · Biography & Memoir

Lena meets Martin three months after her husband's death. He says one sentence she hasn't heard in grief. No fate — just one evening.

Martin appeared in March, three months after I had buried my husband.

He was my colleague's brother. She had decided I wasn't eating enough. I was quietly angry.

He said: you don't have to find this interesting. If you don't have the energy.

I said: I find it very interesting, thank you. That was a lie. He knew that. We both pretended it was true — and that was the first moment in three months I had pretended anything was normal.

The rest took a year.
