The Last Gig
by Cormac · 18 June 2026 · Biography & Memoir
Cormac's band never officially split — they just stopped arranging rehearsals. His son finds the guitar, hears three chords, and is disappointed. Cormac thinks that's fair enough.
The last gig was in Clonakilty on a Thursday in November, support slot for a band from Waterford whose name I've genuinely forgotten. We played well, I think, or at least nobody threw anything, which was the standard we held ourselves to at that point. Afterwards we had a few pints and said we'd rehearse before Christmas and that was, as it turned out, that.
Nobody quit. Nobody had a meeting and said this isn't working. We just stopped arranging rehearsals and after about six months it was clear enough that we weren't going to. I'm not sure what I expected — a proper ending, maybe, something to mark it. What I got was a Thursday in November and then silence that went on until it wasn't silence anymore, just normal life.
I still have the guitar. It's in the spare room under a jacket. My son Declan found it once and asked if I could play and I said yes and played him three chords and he said that's it? and I said that's most of it, which is more or less true. He seemed disappointed. I thought that was fair enough.
