The Handover

by Thomas · 18 June 2026 · Family & Generations

Thomas remembers the day of the farm handover at the notary. His father put down the pen and walked into the yard. Since then he says nothing. His wife wants him to start the other kind of talking.

The appointment at the notary was April 14th, 2015. My father put down the pen and walked out. Not to the car, just into the yard. He stood there and looked at the barn for a while, and I watched through the window and didn't know whether to go out or not. I stayed inside.

After that he didn't talk much about the farm anymore. He's still here, he lives on the other side of the house, I see him every day. But he doesn't ask anymore, he doesn't make suggestions anymore, he watches when I change something without saying anything. It wasn't always like that. I think he decided that's how he does it now, and I think that costs him more than he shows.

My wife Anni says I should talk to him. I say I do talk to him. She means the other kind of talking.
