Pieter moved from his farm near Utrecht into a small annex in his daughter's house two years ago, officially because of his hip, unofficially also because he was tired of eating alone. What he hadn't expected was how much living alongside his nine-year-old grandson Bram would mean learning an entirely new kind of authority — one where he isn't the more experienced one, but regularly the clueless one.
In the first weeks, Bram explained to him, patiently but firmly, that you don't just shoot randomly during their shared video game sessions, that there are rules, teams, an order Pieter had to respect, the same way Pieter once learned from his own father how to properly tether a calf. It felt silly at first, being lectured by a nine-year-old, until Pieter noticed that Bram's seriousness matched exactly the kind Pieter himself once brought to explaining the right time to harvest potatoes: knowledge that matters to someone demands to be passed on, regardless of which direction it flows.
What's grown out of it is a kind of trade neither of them planned. Pieter teaches Bram how to lay out a garden bed, how to tell if an apple is ripe, how to work with his hands without looking at a phone. Bram teaches Pieter how to video-call his old school friend, how to send a photo, how to be not completely useless in his game, as Bram lovingly puts it.
I thought I was moving here to be looked after, Pieter says. Instead I got a nine-year-old teacher just as strict as I once was with his mother.
