The first lost case: a laptop, a GPS photo, a certainty that was wrong. What you learn when you lose for the first time.
The first case I lost was a theft. A laptop. I was twenty-four and certain.
The defense attorney showed a photograph: GPS coordinates three floors below, 2:17 a.m. Ten seconds I hadn't checked.
I sat in my car for forty minutes. Not because I was devastated — I was, but that wasn't the important thing. The important thing: I hadn't looked for the opposite.
The defense attorney said: always look first for what speaks against you. If it isn't there, then you have something. If it is there, better you know it first.
Since then I have never built a case without first breaking it.
