My grandmother kept a small drawer in the kitchen that I was not allowed to open as a child. Not forbidden exactly — she never said don't open it — but something in the way it was positioned, always pushed fully closed, always flush, made it clear the drawer had a private status.

When she died I opened it. I don't know what I expected. What was inside: three buttons that didn't match anything I'd seen her wear, a folded piece of paper with a recipe for something called sznycle that was just schnitzel with a spelling from another era, a small photograph of a man I didn't recognize standing in front of a building that no longer exists according to the street behind him, and one Polish złoty from 1975 that she would have been thirty-one when it was minted.

I put everything back. I closed the drawer. I still haven't moved it.
