The Dog on the Corner
by Hannelore · 18 June 2026 · Biography & Memoir
Since 1989 there has always been a dog sitting at the same corner in Lübeck. Biologically impossible. Hannelore has been greeting him for thirty years. He greets back in his way. That's enough for her.
At the corner of Burgstraße and Breite Straße there has always been a dog sitting since 1989. This is biologically impossible, I know that. There must have been at least four different dogs, probably more. But they all looked the same — medium-sized, yellowish-beige, the face of someone waiting for a bus without knowing when it comes.
The first one was called Bello, I heard that from a distance once. I never heard the second one's name. The third one an older lady tied up there every morning when she went to the chemist and untied every morning when she came back — the same face, the same patience, as if the dog and the lady had been rehearsing it for years. The current one I don't know by name either.
I greet him anyway when I walk past, which I still do even though I've not been delivering post for three years. He greets back in his way. That's enough for me.
