The Danube in Budapest is not the river people expect. In Vienna it's orderly and contained, but in Budapest it's wider than you think, greyish-green in winter and brownish in summer, never quite the blue of the song, which everyone knows and nobody corrects. It runs through the city in a way that makes the city make sense, which is its best quality: it explains why Budapest is where Budapest is.
I walk along it in the evenings sometimes, when the shop is closed and my husband is cooking. There are always other people walking, because there always are, and the lights from Buda are always there, because they always are, and the river moves south toward the sea, unconcerned with what's happening on either bank. I find this comforting in a way that probably says something about me.
