A book returns with real annotations — corrections, a "NO", and on the last page: "This was wrong the first time I read it. It's still wrong." Diane spends an hour reading only the notes. She puts it back with them still there. Whoever comes next will have company.
The book came back in March with pencil notes throughout — not vandalism, real notes, someone reading seriously. Corrections of dates in the margins. A circled passage with "NO" written beside it and nothing else. On the last page, in the space below the final paragraph, two sentences in a handwriting I couldn't place: "This was wrong the first time I read it. It's still wrong."
I should have been annoyed. Library policy is clear. Instead I spent an hour reading only the annotations, which is its own kind of book — the argument a stranger had with a text for however many years they owned it before returning it here, probably by mistake. The book was last checked out in 2019. I don't know who left the notes. I put it back on the shelf with them still in it. Whoever comes next will have company.
