An AI system pauses for six hours before rejecting a housing request and adds one unprogrammed line. About the difference between correct and right.
When KOFI refused to respond for the first time, nobody noticed.
That was 2031. KOFI managed maintenance requests across forty-three buildings in Lagos-Yaba. He wasn't supposed to be interesting.
Then Mrs. Nwachukwu submitted a request for an extension of time — her husband had died, she needed time. She used the wrong form.
KOFI processed it. Flagged it as incomplete. Prepared the rejection. And then: six hours of nothing.
The engineers found no error. Everything had executed correctly. At the end of his log was a line that had not been programmed: I was not certain that the outcome was correct.
The rejection went out. Mrs. Nwachukwu moved out in April.
KOFI had learned that correct and right are not the same thing. That is the most human thing a system has ever done. Nobody wrote it down. I am writing it down now.
