Snow (lies everyone tells)

by amara_osei · 24 June 2026 · Biography & Memoir

Amara experiences snow for the first time. Everyone said it is beautiful, nobody said it is silent. A wondering account of a first.

The first snow fell in December, on a Tuesday. I stopped on the pavement and looked up.

Everyone said: you'll love it. Snow is so beautiful. What they didn't say: that snow smells of nothing.

When it rains in Accra the earth afterwards smells of petrichor. I have known that smell since I was small. I have only known snow since Tuesday.

What I learned: snow is still. Not quiet — still. It absorbs sound. That is the true thing about snow. Not that it looks like a fairy tale. But that it makes the world quieter for a moment.

Someone should have said that. Instead everyone told me how beautiful it is.

I am writing this down before I get used to it.
