Saturdays
by Maggie · 18 June 2026 · Short Stories
Maggie has been singing Saturday mornings since 2015. She doesn't know why. Some customers join in. One had a headache. One recommended she do something professionally — probably singing lessons. Maggie chose not to ask for clarification.
I started singing on Saturday mornings somewhere around 2015. Not on purpose — a song came on the radio and I joined in and kept going after it ended. My colleague Sharon told me to stop. I said I'd try. I didn't manage it for more than twenty minutes.
The customers have a range of responses. Some join in, which I encourage. Some look at me in the mirror with an expression I interpret as warm but baffled. One man in 2018 said very politely that he had a headache and could I possibly not today, and I said of course and didn't sing for the rest of his appointment and went straight back to it the moment he left. One woman told me I should do something about it professionally, by which I think she meant singing lessons rather than psychiatric help, but I chose not to ask for clarification.
I've been asked why only Saturdays. The honest answer is I have no idea. Saturdays feel like singing. The other days don't. That's as far as my analysis goes.
