Same Thing

Cormac misses the twenty minutes before a gig when everything is still open. Bread gives him something similar. His theory: both live in the gap between intention and result. His wife says: so controlled failure? He's still thinking about what she meant.

People sometimes ask if I miss the music, meaning the performing, the being in a band. The honest answer is: sometimes, but less than I'd have expected. What I miss specifically is the twenty minutes before a gig when you don't know yet how it's going to go and there's still everything to play for. That particular kind of anticipation.

I get something like it with bread. Not every day, but when a new batch of sourdough comes out and you cut the first slice and the crust does what you hoped it would do — there's a moment there that feels like the same thing. Not identical. But related.

My theory, which I've explained to my wife twice and she's nodded at without fully believing me, is that it's about the gap between what you intend and what actually happens. In music that gap is where everything interesting lives. In bread it's the same. You can do everything right and still end up with something you didn't quite predict, and whether that's better or worse than what you planned is kind of the whole point.

She said: so it's both just controlled failure? I said yes, more or less. She said that explains a lot. I'm still thinking about what she meant.
