Rotterdam

Pieter defends Rotterdam against its reputation. No medieval centre, no canals — all true. But: most interesting skyline in the Netherlands, water on three sides, afternoon light. Everyone who expected nothing goes home with photographs.
People who don't know Rotterdam describe it as not beautiful. They mean: no medieval centre, no tourist canals, no golden age townhouses. These things are true. What they've misunderstood is the category.
Rotterdam is not Amsterdam. Rotterdam is not Bruges or any of the places people mean when they say European beauty. Rotterdam is a working port that rebuilt itself after 1940 and kept building. The result is the most interesting skyline in the Netherlands, a waterfront that changes every decade, and a quality of light in the afternoon that comes from having water on three sides.
I have lived here my whole life. I have photographed it in every season and every kind of weather. I am not neutral on this. But I'll say one thing: every person I've brought here who expected nothing has gone home with photographs on their phone. That's not nothing. That's Rotterdam being Rotterdam, whether you were ready for it or not.
