Number 14

by Hannelore · 18 June 2026 · Short Stories

Hannelore delivers letters to an address for thirty years where a handwritten letter arrives every other day. She only looks it up when she retires. E. Brandt. That was enough to know.

At Fleischhauerstraße 14 someone lived who received a letter every other day for as long as I can remember. Handwritten, always the same paper, always the same handwriting. I noticed because handwritten letters were still normal in 1985 but not in 2015, and these kept coming anyway. Every other day, for thirty years.

I never looked up who lived there. That wasn't my business. But I thought what I thought about it, naturally.

When I retired I did look it up. The phone book listed an E. Brandt. That was all I could find. I stopped searching after that because E. Brandt clearly had someone who wrote to her or him every other day, and that was enough to know. I hadn't earned more than that.
