No Assignments

Without assignments Jakub draws what's in front of him — a forgotten water glass, a shoe, a crack, a pipe of unknown purpose. In December he looks at the drawings: that's exactly what his November looked like. He doesn't know who else it would seem right to. That's not a new situation.
When I have no assignments, which happens every couple of months for about two weeks, I draw whatever is in front of me. Last November this was: a glass of water I'd forgotten on my desk, a shoe I'd left in the middle of the floor for no reason, a crack in the wall above my window that's been there since I moved in and that I've meant to fix and won't, and the view from my window which is a courtyard with a single tree, three parked bicycles, and a pipe running up the building for a purpose I've never identified.
None of these drawings are for anything. I scan them and put them in a folder called "November" and in December I look at them and think: these are exactly what my November looked like. The glass, the crack, the anonymous pipe. This seems right to me. I don't know who else it would seem right to, but that's not a new situation.
