My Neighbor and the War Over the Leaf Blower
by Bill · 12 July 2026 · Humor & Satire
Bill and his neighbor Ron have been engaged in an unspoken lawn-equipment arms race for years, each escalating their leaf blower arsenal without ever acknowledging the feud. The rivalry peaks one Saturday morning when both men show up simultaneously and burst out laughing at the absurdity of it all. What started as silent competition ends in honest camaraderie over coffee.
Bill has lived on the same street in a Pittsburgh suburb for nineteen years, right next to a man named Ron, with whom he's officially friends and unofficially locked in a cold war fought exclusively over lawn equipment. It started innocently: Bill bought a leaf blower. Two weeks later, Ron bought a louder one. Bill countered with a battery-powered model he advertised to himself alone as quieter, but still impressive. Ron then showed up with a model whose manufacturer description read for commercial use.
What began as a response to leaves has become a system of unspoken rules neither man has ever stated aloud: you never blow before eight in the morning, unless you're sending a message. You never blow longer than your neighbor's last session, except on special occasions. Bill once, after a particularly provocative Sunday-morning deployment from Ron, seriously considered buying a robotic lawn mower purely to demonstrate he could raise the competition to a new technological level, until his wife pointed out he was about to spend his retirement fund on a feud no one but him had ever recognized as a feud.
The high point came last fall, when both men, independently, ended up outside at seven on the same Saturday morning, each with his latest device, and simply looked at each other for a long second before both started laughing at once. They drank coffee on Bill's porch afterward and admitted neither of them remembered who had actually started it.
We still both blow, Bill says, but at least now at the same time, together, like two idiots who agree on being idiots.
