Lagos 2047: A Field Guide
by chidi_okafor · 24 June 2026 · Science Fiction & Fantasy
A speculative field guide to Lagos 2047 — flooding, a bridge market at 3 AM, and a city that saves itself. A counterargument to the catastrophe narrative.
What the old maps misrepresent: the water.
In 2047, a third of Lagos Island is underwater. Not dramatically — the city has adapted. That's what the outside world doesn't understand about Lagos.
The market on the third bridge is open at 3 in the morning. The solar power cooperatives were founded in 2028 by women in Alimosho who didn't want to wait for permits anymore.
I'm making an argument with this story: Lagos will survive. Not because someone saves it. Because it saves itself.
Someone is cooking. Someone is buying. The water is below and the city is above. That is still Lagos.
