I write at night. The apartment is quiet, the city has shifted into a different gear.
At 2 a.m. the street below my window has three tempos: cars with destinations, cars going in circles, parked cars. In my professional experience, cars going in circles mean either teenagers or someone with a problem.
I write crime fiction because I understand crime. Not because I can explain it — explanation fails in court more often than people think. But because I find it honest. A crime is an event where someone wanted something and took it without permission. That is also the structure of most stories.
At 2 a.m. a car starts up. I write another paragraph.
