Growing Up
by Lucy_bloom · 16 October 2026 · Biography & Memoir
A 16-year-old describes their fear of growing up and losing the carefree days of childhood. They long for the innocence of the past while dreading the responsibilities that lie ahead. Caught between a strong sense of duty and a desire for a normal teenage life, they struggle with their identity.
I'm afraid of getting older, so much responsibility. I want to be a child one more time, want to reach my mama's hip one more time. I want to experience once more the night before my birthday when you had so much nervous excitement that you couldn't close your eyes. Shuddering thoughts in my head when I think about having to go to work soon. So much fear of being left on my own. I can't believe it, childhood is leaving me. Will I manage not to sink into chaos? Will I manage to live, to live the way my grandma always wished for me? 16 years old and instead of thinking about parties and drinking like the others my age do, I think about school and everything I still have to master. And every weekend is planned out, but when I do go out to celebrate sometimes I feel so irresponsible. For my future and for myself. Something has to become of me after all. Or does it not?
