Golf

Golf 2003 for the superintendent. Didn't help — no promotion. Kept playing anyway. A course outside Harrogate, autumn light on the moors. Geoffrey Boycott grew up nearby — seems like a man with opinions about fairways. The game: hit, walk, hit. The gap between where you aimed and where it went is the whole sport. Either a metaphor or just golf.
I took up golf in 2003 because my superintendent played golf and I thought it might help. It didn't help. He retired in 2007 still not having promoted me, which I've come to think may have been a comment on my golf rather than my policing. I've kept playing anyway, which suggests either stubbornness or a genuine enjoyment I've been slow to admit.
There is a course outside Harrogate where on a clear day you can see the moors to the west, and in the late afternoon in autumn the light does something to the heather that I've never managed to describe except to say it looks like the moors are on fire in a way that isn't threatening. Geoffrey Boycott grew up not far from here. I don't know if he ever played this course. He seems like a man who would have opinions about the fairways.
The game itself is an exercise in managing expectations. You hit the ball, you walk to where it landed, you hit it again. The gap between where you intended it to go and where it went is the whole sport, which is either a metaphor for something or just golf.
