February

by Diane · 18 June 2026 · Travel & Nature

Québec in February: tourists gone, city contracts. Icy streets, wind off the St. Lawrence. The Château Frontenac looks built for exactly this. The cold arrives with intention. Diane has missed it every summer since she was twenty — which suggests something about her she hasn't fully examined.

In Québec City in February the tourists are gone, the summer festivals are months away, and the city contracts into itself. The streets in the old town are icy and the wind comes off the St. Lawrence at a temperature that makes philosophical discussion impossible. The locals walk fast and don't look at their phones.

I love it. Not bravely — it's just that February is when the city is only what it is. Stone and hill and river and cold. The Château Frontenac looks like it was built to resist exactly this weather. I walk to work every morning in it and the cold is specific, not general, the kind that arrives with intention. It wakes something up. I've missed it every summer since I was twenty, which suggests something about me that I haven't fully examined.
