Dave Pelletier and I shared a shop in Stowe for six years before he quit woodworking in 2018 to manage a hardware store. I thought this was a mistake. I still think this was a mistake. He thinks it was the right call and that I need to let it go. We've had versions of this conversation every time we see each other, which is about three times a year, usually at the hardware store where he gives me his employee discount and I tell him he's wasted there.

He's not miserable. That's the part that's harder to argue with than I'd like. He comes home at five-thirty, coaches his son's hockey team, takes his wife to Portland for long weekends. The work doesn't follow him home. It used to follow both of us home.

I still think he should come back. He still says he's fine. Neither of us has convinced the other. That's probably fine.
