Brno vs. Prague

by Jakub · 18 June 2026 · Local & Regional

Brno: second-largest city, 200km from Prague. Prague makes jokes about Brno. Brno makes them about itself first. Jakub moved back after two years. Why? Because Brno is funnier. They thought he was joking. He wasn't.

Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic. Prague is the largest. The distance between them is about 200 kilometres. The distance between how they see each other is harder to measure.

In Prague they make jokes about Brno. In Brno we make the same jokes about ourselves before Prague gets the chance, which is a different kind of joke. We are proud in a way that doesn't photograph well — not the pride you wave at tourists, but the kind that sits quietly in a bar and knows things. The things it knows are mostly about Brno, which is a limited subject, but it knows them thoroughly.

I moved back here after two years in Prague. Everyone asked why. I said: because Brno is funnier. They thought I was joking. I wasn't.
