Auckland vs Wellington

by Bob · 18 June 2026 · Humor & Satire

Wellington: better coffee — conceded. Arts: comparable by Bob's metrics (which Wellington people would dispute). Auckland: three million, the harbour, direct flights, no July jacket. Wellington: very nice waterfront. Bob has been 42 times, enjoyed 31 — objectively good ratio. Simply finds it easier to enjoy from Auckland.

Wellington people will tell you Wellington has better coffee, better arts, a better scene generally. Some of this is true. The coffee is better. I'll grant that without argument. The arts are comparable if you limit yourself to things I actually attend, which Wellington people would probably consider a flaw in the comparison methodology.

What Auckland has: three million people, the Waitematā Harbour, an international airport that connects to places directly rather than via Sydney, and a climate that doesn't require a second jacket in July. Wellington has a very nice waterfront. It is, I understand, very lively. I have been to Wellington forty-two times in my life. I have enjoyed approximately thirty-one of those visits, which is objectively a good ratio. I simply find it easier to enjoy it from Auckland.
