Shyne, a high school student and only child, is left alone when her parents travel to Dubai for business. As her parents remain unreachable and distracted, she struggles with loneliness and the painful feeling of being deprioritized. Her friend Rob offers brief comfort, but the emotional distance from her mother weighs heavily on her.
A Daughter’s Silent Tears
Shyne is a high school student and her parents' only daughter. Way back, their life was happy, and all of her parent’s attention was on her. Every time she came home from school, her mother always greeted her and baked her snacks. Her father always dropped her off at school and picked her up on time. Shyne didn’t know that this would change. Her mother and father’s business in Dubai became more and more successful.
Shyne’s mother said, “We will be leaving for one month because we have something to take care of for the business in Dubai.” Shyne became silent as tears fell from her eyes. “Can I go with you?” Shyne asked. “Shyne, you have school, and you cannot be absent, okay?” her mother said. “But why?” Shyne asked. “As I said, you have school. Don’t make me lose my temper, Shyne,” her mother replied.
Shyne walked to her room quietly. The next day, her mother woke her up and said, “Shyne, wake up!” She asked, “Do you want to come with us to the airport?” Shyne replied, “I have school, as you said. I cannot be absent.” Her mother said, “Okay, take care of yourself while we’re gone, okay?” “Mhmm,” Shyne replied.
Sandra left for Dubai without knowing that her daughter would feel lonely without her. Shyne arrived at school, and Rob, her boy best friend, noticed that her eyes looked tired. “Shyne, are you feeling alright?” Rob asked. “Yeah, I’m okay,” Shyne replied. Rob asked, “I heard your mom is out of town?” “Yeah, she is,” Shyne said. “Mind if I come over after school?” “Sure, why not, Rob?” Shyne said. “Great!” Rob replied.
After school, Rob went to Shyne’s house and knocked on the door. “Shyne, are you home?” Rob asked. Shyne opened the door and said, “Oh! Hey, Rob, you really came!” Rob came inside, and they chatted about their school projects. “Shyne, it’s getting late. I should head out,” Rob said. “Alright, see you tomorrow,” Shyne replied. They smiled at each other, and Shyne felt relieved because she had someone to talk to about her feelings.
That night, Shyne fell asleep while scrolling on TikTok. The next morning was Saturday, and Shyne woke up feeling great. “I should clean the house today,” she said to herself. Shyne started cleaning, and when she finished, she ate her breakfast. Later that day, the house was very silent, and Shyne felt lonely. “I wish Mom and Dad were here,” she said. “I should call Mom.” Sandra looked at her phone and saw missed calls from Shyne. Sandra called Shyne and said, “I’ll call you later once I’m not busy anymore.” The call ended, and Shyne felt sad.
“Why won’t Mom have time for me?” she wondered. “I miss Mom. I miss the way she was always there for me,” Shyne said. Ten days passed, and Shyne was still waiting for her mom to come home. One Sunday morning, Shyne was bored and wondered what her mom was doing. “Hmm, I should call Mom again,” she said. Her phone rang, but the same thing happened again. “I’m busy. I can’t call right now,” her mom said.
Shyne put her phone down and cried. She wondered, “Does Mom still love me?” With her eyes watering, she decided to call her dad. Richard answered and said, “I’m busy,” before ending the call. “Ugh, I hate my life,” Shyne said sadly. Her aunt Jenny came over to check on her. Jenny knocked on the door and asked, “Shyne, are you home?” Shyne opened the door, and Jenny noticed that her eyes looked tired. Jenny hugged her tightly and asked, “What’s wrong, Shyne? You can tell me anything.” They sat down and talked, and Shyne told Jenny everything while crying. “I’m so sorry about that, Shyne. We never knew you were going through this,” Jenny said. “It’s okay, Auntie. It’s not your fault,” Shyne replied.
“I have to go home now, Shyne. My son is waiting for me at home,” Jenny said. “Okay, Auntie. Take care!” Shyne replied. After Jenny got home, she decided to chat with Sandra and tell her about Shyne’s feelings. A few minutes later, Sandra replied, “Oh, I didn’t know that. I’m going to book a flight home tomorrow afternoon.” Jenny replied, “Please talk to Shyne. She’s just a little girl with feelings.” Sandra said, “Yes, I will. Thank you so much for letting me know.” “Take care, Sandra,” Jenny replied.
The next morning, Sandra started packing for her flight. Shyne did not go to school because she was sick. That afternoon, Sandra was on her way to the airport. “I really didn’t know that she felt that way. I’m going to make it up to her once I arrive,” Sandra said to herself. Sandra finally arrived home, and Shyne was sitting quietly when she heard someone at the door.
“Surprise!” Sandra said. “Mom? Hi!” Shyne replied. “MOMMY!” Shyne cried as she hugged her mother. “I missed you so much, Mom!” Shyne said. “I missed you too, sweetheart. Why is your forehead so hot? Do you have a fever?” Sandra asked. “Yes, Mom,” Shyne replied. “Come on, eat some fruit and take a nap for a while,” Sandra said. “Okay, Mom,” Shyne replied.
Shyne slowly fell asleep, and Sandra watched her. “I’ll wait for her to feel better, then I’ll talk to her,” Sandra said to herself. When Shyne woke up, she called out, “Mom?” Sandra replied, “Yes, I’m here. Don’t worry.” “Shyne, can we talk for a while?” Sandra asked. “Sure, Mom. What’s up?” Shyne replied. “Is it true that you’ve been going through a lot since our business became successful?” Sandra asked.
“Honestly, Mom, yes,” Shyne answered. “You know, your dad and I have changed since that business of ours became successful,” Sandra said. Shyne and Sandra talked for a long time. “I’m sorry for not knowing that sooner, Shyne,” Sandra said. “But why didn’t you tell us?” her mother asked. “I was scared,” Shyne replied. “Don’t be scared. Come here,” Sandra said as she hugged her daughter tightly. “Mom, where’s Dad?” Shyne asked.
“He’ll come home soon, and we’ll take you to your favorite fast-food restaurant,” Sandra replied. “Yay! Okay!” Shyne said happily. Richard arrived home and said, “I’m home!” “Yay!” Shyne replied. Richard hugged Shyne and Sandra. “Let’s go!” Richard said. “Okay, Dad!” Shyne replied. When they arrived at the restaurant, they ordered their food and ate together. “I’m so full! Thanks, Mom. Thanks, Dad,” Shyne said.
They headed home and talked for a bit as a family. “We’re sorry, Shyne. We really didn’t know that you were feeling that way,” Richard said. “Yeah, we’re really sorry, Shyne. We promise that we will always make time for you,” Sandra added. Shyne hugged both of her parents tightly. After that night, Richard and Sandra kept their promise to Shyne. Shyne was very happy that her parents now have time for her every day. When she needs them, they are always there for her.
Shyne doesn’t cry anymore. She has someone to cook her food and drive her to school every day. She has nothing to worry about anymore. Shyne now has a happy and complete family. They lived happily ever after together.
The End.
